Two related methods developed by the authors are reviewed - counterflow isotachophoresis and immuno-electrochromatography on porous membranes. The characteristics of electro-osmosis in porous membranes during isotachophoresis are important for both methods. Principles and applications of the methods are described including electrophoretic analysis of low-protein biological liquids and automatic multistep immunochemical reactions such as Western blotting, epitope analysis of monoclonal antibodies, and multiantigen tests. The methods can be used for the detection of DNA-binding proteins.

KEY WORDS: isotachophoresis, electroendosmosis, counterflow isotachophoresis, automatic immunoblotting, acetate cellulose membrane, immuno-electrochromatography, epitope analysis, DNA-binding protein.
