Pocket Dictionary of Biochemistry - Taschenwörterbuch der Biochemie (Deutsch-Englisch, Englisch-Deutsch) (P. Reuter, ed., Birkhäuser Verlag AG, Basel-Berlin-Boston, 2000, 560 p., ISBN 3-7643-6197-2)

This bilingual pocket dictionary of biochemistry by Peter Reuter contains more than 30,000 entries and subentries and some 50,000 translations of terms used in different fields of biochemistry, immunology, and molecular and cell biology as well as in some fields of physiology and medicine. Starting from 1989 Peter Reuter, physician, and Christine Reuter, professional translator, have built a comprehensive medical and scientific bilingual databases. They worked for 10 years in Great Britain and are now they in Florida (USA). Peter and Christine Reuter have already published more than a dozen dictionaries and CD-ROMs. One of the undoubted advantages of Reuter's dictionary of biochemistry is the harmonic combination of high specialization with excellent linguistic and lexicographic treatment. The German terms in the first (German-English) part of the dictionary were checked for the new rules of orthography. This part of the book uses American English terms for translation. The second part of the dictionary (English-German) contains both British and American terms, thus making it possible to find terms from either variant of the language. As a rule, each term is accompanied by several synonyms. Both official and trivial names are given for many enzymes, and there are short comments for certain terms. The dictionary is appended by two appendices for conversion of British-American values of length, weight, volume, and temperature to the values used in Europe. The dictionary also contains a very useful list of widely used abbreviations. There is no doubt that the Birkhäuser bilingual pocket dictionary of biochemistry will be very useful for both translators and scientists working in the fields of biochemistry, physiology, and medicine.
